Summary
Amaranth production in Tulyehualco, Xochimilco, Mexico City, demonstrates that while direct sowing yields higher profits, traditional chapin (seedbed) cultivation, though more costly and less efficient, holds cultural significance. The study, conducted between 2010-2019 with surveys of 35 producers, 3 marketers, and 4 transformers in late 2019, found that Xochimilco dominates amaranth production, accounting for 60.4% of the harvested area and 55.6% of national output. Despite higher costs and lower yields in chapin cultivation, it persists due to ancestral knowledge. The research recommends adopting modern technologies for density, nutrition, and pest control to enhance profitability while preserving traditional practices.
