Summary

Nowy Square in Kraków’s Kazimierz district retains its unique historical character, shaped by centuries of urban development from the 14th to the 20th century. The square’s current form emerged through key transformations, including the incorporation of the village of Bawół (1340), the construction of defensive walls, and the expansion of the Jewish Town in 1608. The study highlights how modern urban planning concepts from the Free City of Kraków era (1815–1846) and Galicia’s autonomy (1867–1918) replaced wooden structures with brick buildings, preserving the area’s historical essence despite the Holocaust’s devastation. Today, the Centre for Jewish Culture serves as a cultural anchor, maintaining the square’s heritage and its enduring nickname, 'Jewish Square,' among local residents.
