Summary
New Lanark, Scotland, emerges as a paradigm of historical utopian processes, revealing how shifting perceptions shaped its significance from 1784 to 1825. This study demonstrates that the 'naturaleza humana sociable' (sociable human nature) concept, central to Robert Owen's vision and later owenism, was pivotal in the utopization, reutopization, and desutopization of the site. Analysis of Owen's writings and visitor accounts highlights how these narratives influenced interpretations, while the absence of such perspectives among workers' testimonies explains why they did not perceive New Lanark as a utopia. The research approach combines historical analysis with discourse examination to uncover the layered meanings embedded in this industrial enclave.
