Sustainable authenticity in a World Heritage Site: The Maritime Greenwich example

A balance between authenticity and technological modernization is achievable within UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS), including Maritime Greenwich, without compromising historical significance. This study demonstrates that technology adoption can coexist with the preservation of a site's outstanding universal value, crucial for sustainable tourism. Researchers used qualitative methods—face-to-face interviews, focus group discussions, and personal observations—to explore this dynamic at the Maritime Greenwich WHS in the UK. Findings suggest that while UNESCO guidelines prioritize authenticity, modern technological integration is not only possible but also necessary to meet contemporary demands without eroding a site's cultural integrity.
