Summary

A previously feared extinct subspecies of Ixora scheffleri, I. ssp. keniensis (Rubiaceae), has been rediscovered in Ragati Forest, Mount Kenya National Park/Natural Forest. This rare tree, long thought to have vanished, is now known to be exploited by local communities for charcoal production, highlighting its ecological significance and the threats it faces. The discovery underscores the importance of conserving its natural habitat while also advocating for ex situ conservation efforts, such as propagation in botanical gardens, to ensure its survival. This finding provides critical insights into the biodiversity of Mount Kenya and the challenges of preserving rare species in regions with human pressure.
