Summary
A seroprevalence survey of 14 potential pathogens in golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellanae) at Shennongjia National Nature Reserve, China, revealed significant infection rates for Macacine herpesvirus-1 (57.7%), Golden snub-nosed monkey cytomegalovirus (38.5%), Simian foamy virus (26.9%), and Hepatitis A virus (7.7%). No evidence was found for other pathogens like Coxsackievirus, Measles virus, or Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Notably, MaHV-1 infection was strongly associated with older monkeys (≥4 years). The study analyzed 283 fecal samples and 26 blood samples using serological assays, PCR, and IFN-γ release assays, providing critical insights for the conservation of this endangered primate species.
