Summary

A minimum of 21% and 27% of rooftop areas in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and Puerto Ayora, respectively, must be covered with solar panels to meet current electricity demand in the Galápagos Islands. This study introduces a cost-effective method using low-resolution data to estimate rooftop solar potential, addressing gaps in high-resolution datasets for remote or developing regions. The approach allows local communities and decision-makers to assess solar viability before detailed analysis. Findings reveal Puerto Baquerizo Moreno's higher solar production potential, offering land-efficient renewable energy solutions while preserving natural protected areas.
