Summary
Great Zimbabwe, renowned as one of the world's most iconic archaeological sites, experienced significant material and cultural transformations from the late 19th century to the present. This study reveals that the site's evolution extended far beyond its ancient origins, encompassing European trading activities, colonial-era developments, and modern heritage management. Key findings include the establishment of a trading station by Adam Render in the 1860s and Willie Posselt's camp in the 1880s near the sacred chisikana spring, alongside the construction of staff houses and amenities during its development as a national park and monument. The research approach combines historical documentation with archaeological insights to trace these material changes, highlighting the site's dynamic history beyond its pre-colonial significance.
