Summary
A recent study has revealed that the herpetological diversity in Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico, is part of one of the richest assemblages in the Americas. The research provides a comprehensive species list with new distribution notes, contributing significantly to our understanding of amphibian and reptile biodiversity in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The study employed field surveys and data compilation to document 208 species, including several with previously unknown distributions. This finding underscores the importance of Calakmul's protected tropical forests as a critical habitat for herpetofaunal diversity.
