Summary
The inscription of the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces (HHRTs) as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 significantly accelerated tourism development in China's remote Honghe County, transforming the landscape and local communities. This study reveals that while tourism and heritage systems are often intertwined, their combined impact has led to profound changes in the HHRTs, reshaping both the cultural landscape and the lives of its inhabitants. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, analyzing data from interviews, field observations, and archival records to examine the socio-cultural and environmental transformations since the early 1990s. Findings underscore the complex interplay between heritage designation, tourism growth, and local development, offering insights into the broader implications of UNESCO's World Heritage program.
