The Challenge of Kosovo

Medieval Monuments in Kosovo face persistent armed protection due to ongoing conflicts, yet this phenomenon receives little attention despite its significance. The study highlights the complex fate of Serbian royal foundations in the region, revealing that their historical narratives are often polarized along sectarian lines, which poses challenges for traditional art history methodologies. Notably, some of these sites, nominally Christian, were historically venerated by Muslims, a practice largely overlooked in academic discourse. This essay argues that integrating such diverse religious experiences into the study of these monuments is crucial, as it not only enriches our understanding but also reflects on the limitations and scope of art history's analytical tools.
