Summary
A shift from systematic Byzantine traditions to fragmented Art Nouveau elements was identified in the monumental painting of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra churches between 1890s–1910s. The study, using historical and art-historical analysis, revealed that while Byzantine ornaments and golden backgrounds persisted in decorative aspects, narrative themes aligned with late academicism. The term 'Neo-Byzantine style' for the Great Church's paintings was deemed incorrect, and the transition to Art Nouveau in the Refectory Church was traced to 1902, coinciding with an artist change. Preparatory sketches from the Great Church influenced later compositions, though Byzantine techniques like mosaics were not revived.
