Summary

A novel strategy to reduce human-elephant conflict near Chitwan National Park, Nepal, was tested by housing a female elephant and her offspring within a community forest area. This approach successfully deterred male elephants from incurring into human-dominated landscapes, as the presence of females eliminated their motivation for such behavior. However, the method had to be abandoned after eight months due to regulatory restrictions imposed by authorities, highlighting both its potential effectiveness and the challenges of implementing long-term solutions in protected areas.
