An appraisal of tree and fauna species diversity and distribution of Osogbo sacred grove, Osun State, Nigeria

A comprehensive appraisal of the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Nigeria, reveals significant biodiversity with 70 tree species from 26 families and diverse fauna, underscoring its ecological importance. The study highlights that the core zone exhibits higher diversity (3.06) compared to buffer (2.995) and outer zones (2.16), with Fabaceae and Apocynaceae families being the most abundant tree species. Most tree species are categorized as least concerning (71.1%), while 6.7% are vulnerable, reflecting a generally stable but not entirely secure status. Fauna diversity is also notable, with Class Aves dominating (61.4%) and Mona monkeys being the most frequently sighted species. The research emphasizes an urgent need for enhanced security and sustainable management to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site's biodiversity.
