Summary
Mykola Viacheslavovych Kholostenko's groundbreaking research on the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, spanning decades (1952–1972), revealed critical architectural and construction details that had been obscured for centuries. He was the first to systematically classify bricks from the 11th to 17th centuries, uncovering previously unknown elements hidden behind later extensions. His work included reconstructing the cathedral's original dimensions, proportions, and plan, as well as recreating its original appearance—a feat achieved through meticulous analysis of archaeological remains and iconographic sources. These findings laid the foundation for the Lavra's restoration project (1998–2000), cementing Kholostenko's legacy as a pioneering figure in the study and preservation of Kyiv's architectural heritage.
