Summary

The sculptural cycles of Amiens, Paris, and Chartres cathedrals reveal a sophisticated tropological symbolism where animals accompany vices and virtues with distinct moral meanings. This study deciphers the allegorical significance of eleven creatures by cross-referencing medieval sources—including biblical texts, patristic writings, sermons, and exempla—alongside iconographical studies. The analysis shows that the symbolic interplay between animals and their accompanying vices or virtues was a deliberate design choice, with sculptures themselves serving as primary symbolic sources in some cases.
