Summary
Deep long-period earthquakes beneath the Klyuchevskoi Volcano Group in Kamchatka do not follow the typical Gutenberg-Richter power-law distribution seen in tectonic seismicity, instead resembling normal or gamma distributions with characteristic mean values. This suggests a distinct seismic mechanism linked to deep magmatic and hydrothermal systems at the crust-mantle boundary, potentially serving as an early precursor to volcanic eruptions. Researchers analyzed over 40,000 events recorded between 2011–2012 using matched-filter processing of seismograms and moment magnitude scaling, providing new insights into the recurrence patterns of these deep volcanic earthquakes.
