Summary
A shift from domestic to ritual labor appropriation occurred in the Casas Grandes region, Mexico, during the Medio period (AD 1200–1450), particularly around Paquimé. Unlike traditional modes of production, this new system channeled surplus labor into site construction, communal agriculture for feasting, and advanced craftsmanship while maintaining limited elite exploitation. The study argues that these changes represent an evolution rather than a complete departure from the domestic mode, suggesting a nuanced social organization in pre-Hispanic societies.
