Summary

Geißenklösterle Cave holds significant insights into the Upper Palaeolithic period and the spread of anatomically modern humans. A recent research-historical review highlights that while the cave's stratigraphy presents challenges due to past excavation methods and external influences, it retains substantial integrity, particularly in its Aurignacian layers. The study reconstructs the chronological process of layer identification and naming, revealing inconsistencies caused by earlier test trenches and deep soundings. Despite these issues, the pioneering work of Joachim Hahn established a robust foundation for understanding Palaeolithic occupation. This review underscores the importance of critical analysis within the research-historical context to advance knowledge of Aurignacian occupation at Geißenklösterle.
