Summary

A new record of the arboreal wolf spider species, Hogna trunca, has been documented in Japan, marking its first occurrence outside China. Originally described from Zhejiang Province, this lycosid spider was found in Nara Prefecture and northern Okinawa Island, with observations in forest habitats along streams. Notably, Hogna trunca exhibits a rare arboreal behavior within the Lycosidae family, which typically comprises ground-dwelling species. The discovery suggests that its unique ecology may have previously hindered detection. This finding also represents the first record of the genus Hogna in Japan.
