Summary
Nearly half of Chartres Cathedral's medieval manuscript collection, one of France's most significant, was lost to a 1944 bombing that destroyed the city's municipal library. The study reveals that while 164 parchment fragments were recovered and restored between 1944 and 1948, their fragmented state—often blackened by fire or weakened by water—poses significant challenges for preservation and research. These manuscripts, dating from the Carolingian era to the 12th century, included works on ancient authors, medicine, liturgy, and local history, offering invaluable insights into medieval intellectual life. The research highlights the catastrophic loss of cultural heritage and the ongoing efforts to reconstruct these damaged texts, emphasizing the need for cautious handling due to their fragile condition.
