Summary
A striking parallel emerges between the religious themes of the Behistun Inscription, dating back 2500 years to the reign of Emperor Darius I (522–486 BCE), and core Islamic principles. The inscription's focus on concepts such as truth, justice, preservation of scripture, prayer, and invocations aligns almost identically with Islamic values, suggesting a shared intent despite its pre-Islamic origin. This study reveals that the inscription's dindar (pious) approach to governance and devotion to Ahura Mazda’s rules mirrors Islamic teachings, further supported by comparisons drawn from the Quran, Bible, Torah, and Avesta. Such an analysis not only highlights the inscription's continuity with Islamic traditions but also proposes its relevance in modern Islamic practices, such as charitable endowments (waqf), where similar invocations are used to ensure longevity. This perspective offers a novel lens through which to view the Behistun Inscription, bridging ancient Persian and Islamic thought.
