Summary
A new archaeological study of the historic centre of Porto, within the UNESCO-listed 'Historic Centre of Oporto, Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar,' reveals significant insights into the ceramic material culture of Early Medieval Portucale. Analyzing coarse ware from the archaeological site at Rua de D. Hugo, No. 5, researchers identified distinct ceramic assemblages that highlight cultural exchanges between Mediterranean and Atlantic regions during this period. The study employed a systematic classification methodology to examine these materials, providing preliminary evidence of cross-regional influences in high medieval Porto. This research contributes to understanding the urban development and transregional connections of Portucale during its formative years.
