Summary

Re-analysis of archaeological collections from Tsagaan Agui Cave, Mongolia, reveals a non-Levallois Mousterian lithic industry distinct from previously studied Middle Paleolithic sites in the Orkhon and Kharganyn Gol valleys. This finding places the cave's industry within a refined chronological sequence, offering new insights into regional stone tool production during this period. The study combines technological and typological analyses of 1980s collections with recent excavations to identify transitional tool types and primary flaking systems, while comparing these complexes to those in Siberia and eastern Asia. Preliminary results suggest a unique non-Levallois Mousterian character, challenging assumptions about Middle Paleolithic tool traditions in the Gobi Altai. The research also highlights untapped potential for interdisciplinary scientific investigations in northern Mongolia's archaeological landscapes.
