World cultural heritage monuments in Kosovo and Metohija: Problems and perspectives of protection

Four Serbian medieval shrines in Kosovo and Metohija were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2006, but face significant preservation challenges due to ongoing conflicts and management difficulties. The study highlights the need for a comprehensive, long-term approach to protecting these sites, which are not only of great cultural importance to Serbia but also symbolize the intertwined influences of Eastern and Western Christianity. It proposes integrating international, national, and local protection efforts while framing these monuments as part of a broader cultural landscape that encompasses both tangible and intangible heritage. This approach aims to foster mutual respect among ethnic groups and support regional stability, which is crucial for European integration efforts.
