Summary

A comparative analysis of Yelysei Pletenetskyi’s and Petro Mohyla’s enlightenment initiatives at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra reveals their shared goal of revitalizing the Orthodox Church and Ukrainian culture, despite distinct ideological and linguistic influences. Pletenetskyi’s Pechersk Cultural and Educational Circle, which prioritized Greek and Church Slavonic, laid the foundation for Mohyla’s Western-oriented reforms, including Latin-Polish educational integration and expanded use of the Ukrainian language. The study highlights their complementary roles in overcoming a period of decline, with Pletenetskyi’s Eastern-influenced approach transitioning into Mohyla’s more globally engaged model, both contributing significantly to national self-awareness and ecclesiastical authority.
