Summary

Bourges Cathedral, though often overshadowed by Chartres, represents a unique and innovative architectural vision in the development of Gothic architecture. This study redefines Bourges' historical significance by highlighting its integrated spatial conception and structural advancements, particularly the use of flying buttresses, which allowed for unprecedented verticality and spatial equilibrium. Unlike Chartres, Bourges' design was not widely replicated due to its adaptation to liturgical needs, yet it remains a testament to the artistic emancipation and structural ingenuity of High Gothic architecture. The research contextualizes Bourges within medieval architectural history, challenging long-standing biases by emphasizing its cohesive vision and distinctive features.
